Surprise!

Photobucket

Holy. Moley.

Meg tells me yesterday morning that her dad invited us to dinner to celebrate mine and Caryn's birthday and go over some wedding stuff, to which I reply, "that's really nice, but we have a lot of stuff to do tonight." Little did I know...

I agree to this dinner, because, hey, a nice gesture is a nice gesture. Now keep in mind, my head has been firmly up my you-know-what lately because I've been in complete work mode from waking to sleeping. Let me stress to you how dumb I've been. I was making a turkey and cheese panini sandwich yesterday, and the turkey felt a little...slimey. I think to myself, "the panini maker will cook that slime right out!" I take a bite out of the sandwich. It's not good. But rather than throw it away, I think to myself, "can't waste food, saving for wedding, and it can't be that bad, right?" I take another bite. Gahhh. I get to the third bite, and the meat was so slimy it fell out of the sandwich and onto the floor, revealing it's total slimitude. The dogs were even reluctant to go near it. I then threw out the sandwich, and proceeded to feel nauseous for the next three hours.

That's how far my head has been firmly up my you-know-what lately. So when we pull up to the restaurant, and I see her mom's car, I think to myself, "Well, that can't be her car. Or if it is, maybe Caryn borrowed it." And when I get inside, I see my friend Jason, and think," oh, that makes sense. He's in town visiting his parents, this'll be so cool, I can say hi to Jason."

And then I see beards. Lots and lots of my friends and family wearing beards. And it's at this moment when I realize I've been fooled. Duped. Bamboozled, even! Meg organized a surprise party, while planning a wedding! And all these important people in my life were great enough to come out, wear beards, hang out and spend an evening with me.

It's been a crazy year, and at times the strain of it all makes you worry about yourself, about your relationships with everyone, and where it's all going. But last night, well, that was something I'll remember forever. Unless I eat something so slimy that I lose my mind....

Thank you everyone. And to the girl who arranged it, I think I'll marry you.

  1. That's a little unsettling considering; I've had a panini from that very panini maker before, and can only imagine that I barely escaped a painfully agonizing death.

  2. That was a nice story. What a great read. Oh, and keep an eye out for those killer panini sandwiches.
